JARED WAS THE FIRST TO GET cleaned up and exit the house. He reiterated the importance of setting the security system before he left, and then drove to the sheriff’s department. They were having a strategy meeting, but from what Jared could tell, there was no strategy to be found.

“We’re blanketing the area, searching everywhere we can think, but we don’t have a lot of solid leads,” Sheriff Clayne noted as he addressed the officers in the room. “Our only solid lead is the call Jackson made to Detective Monroe’s wife last evening.”

“I don’t understand why we’re not using that to our advantage,” one of the deputies argued. “I mean … if we know this guy wants her, why not use her as bait?”

Jared immediately balked. “We’re not using my wife as bait.”

Clayne held up his hand to still Jared before things got out of hand. “We’re not using anybody as bait,” he stressed. “Quinn Jackson is a dangerous individual. He’s impossible to track right now because he has no ties to the area.”

“What about that crazy lady from yesterday?” another deputy queried. “Isn’t it possible he’s right now holed up in her house?”

“It’s possible he managed to get inside through the woods,” Clayne admitted. “Is it likely? Probably not. It’s possible though. We can’t get inside that house a second time without more to go on to secure a second warrant, so we’re going to have to maintain our presence in the neighborhood and leave it at that for now.”

“Why wouldn’t he just leave?” a female voice asked. When Jared glanced over his shoulder, he couldn’t make out a face to go with the question. “I mean … wouldn’t the smart thing be to get out of here? Why isn’t he on his way to the Ambassador Bridge? Or even Mexico. Why would he possibly want to stay in Michigan?”

“I can’t answer that,” Clayne said. “His motivations have always been murky. Given the conversation that transpired between the suspect and Mrs. Monroe last evening, I think it’s fair to say that he has revenge on his mind.”

“Or he just wants us to think that,” the first deputy who spoke countered. “Maybe he made the call because he wants us to focus on Mrs. Monroe. That will give him space to navigate as he runs.”

“We’re taking it all into consideration,” Clayne promised. “We’re not ruling anything out. Right now, we’ve tapped the state police. We’re also calling in the fugitive apprehension team from the Feds.”

A grumble went up through the crowd. Nobody enjoyed inviting in outsiders.

“I know it’s not ideal,” Clayne stressed. “We don’t have any other options, however. We have to deal with this the best way we can. It’s not safe for anybody the longer Jackson is out there. We know he’s not afraid to kill. If he gets backed into a corner and there’s an innocent around … .” Clayne trailed off.

“What about you?” the deputy to Jared’s right queried, fixing his full attention on Jared. “You know him.
