JARED WAS THE FIRST TO GET cleaned up and exit the house. He reiterated the importance of setting the security system before he left, and then drove to the sheriffâs department. They were having a strategy meeting, but from what Jared could tell, there was no strategy to be found.
âWeâre blanketing the area, searching everywhere we can think, but we donât have a lot of solid leads,â Sheriff Clayne noted as he addressed the officers in the room. âOur only solid lead is the call Jackson made to Detective Monroeâs wife last evening.â
âI donât understand why weâre not using that to our advantage,â one of the deputies argued. âI mean ⦠if we know this guy wants her, why not use her as bait?â
Jared immediately balked. âWeâre not using my wife as bait.â
Clayne held up his hand to still Jared before things got out of hand. âWeâre not using anybody as bait,â he stressed. âQuinn Jackson is a dangerous individual. Heâs impossible to track right now because he has no ties to the area.â
âWhat about that crazy lady from yesterday?â another deputy queried. âIsnât it possible heâs right now holed up in her house?â
âItâs possible he managed to get inside through the woods,â Clayne admitted. âIs it likely? Probably not. Itâs possible though. We canât get inside that house a second time without more to go on to secure a second warrant, so weâre going to have to maintain our presence in the neighborhood and leave it at that for now.â
âWhy wouldnât he just leave?â a female voice asked. When Jared glanced over his shoulder, he couldnât make out a face to go with the question. âI mean ⦠wouldnât the smart thing be to get out of here? Why isnât he on his way to the Ambassador Bridge? Or even Mexico. Why would he possibly want to stay in Michigan?â
âI canât answer that,â Clayne said. âHis motivations have always been murky. Given the conversation that transpired between the suspect and Mrs. Monroe last evening, I think itâs fair to say that he has revenge on his mind.â
âOr he just wants us to think that,â the first deputy who spoke countered. âMaybe he made the call because he wants us to focus on Mrs. Monroe. That will give him space to navigate as he runs.â
âWeâre taking it all into consideration,â Clayne promised. âWeâre not ruling anything out. Right now, weâve tapped the state police. Weâre also calling in the fugitive apprehension team from the Feds.â
A grumble went up through the crowd. Nobody enjoyed inviting in outsiders.
âI know itâs not ideal,â Clayne stressed. âWe donât have any other options, however. We have to deal with this the best way we can. Itâs not safe for anybody the longer Jackson is out there. We know heâs not afraid to kill. If he gets backed into a corner and thereâs an innocent around ⦠.â Clayne trailed off.
âWhat about you?â the deputy to Jaredâs right queried, fixing his full attention on Jared. âYou know him.
